The Requirements That Actually Block You
Rejection in a job search usually isn't about talent — it's about a hard requirement you didn't meet and often couldn't see. We measured which requirements do the disqualifying, across every posting Boardsweep has read.
We read 27,951 real roles. Here is exactly what they demand — and how often each gate stops the candidates who lack it:
Fix now — quick wins
- Spanish — 31% of candidates who lack it are blocked. A gate you can close — and it opens roles that reject you today. "Fluency in English and Spanish."
- SQL — 53% of candidates who lack it are blocked. Teams here expect it; worth adding to your CV. "Experience with microservices, REST API, event based architecture, SQL, noSQL and EntityFramework"
- German — 47% of candidates who lack it are blocked. Closeable, and it stands between you and real roles. "Fluency in German or Dutch (required for client communication)"
- AI/ML tooling — 54% of candidates who lack it are blocked. A common ask — a little upskilling pays back fast. "A good understanding of statistical modelling knowledge or any machine learning technique knowledge"
- AWS — 57% of candidates who lack it are blocked. Learnable — a focused course closes it. "Experiencia sólida en operaciones cloud sobre: Microsoft Azure. AWS."
- Azure — 58% of candidates who lack it are blocked. "Azure experience with WebAPI, containers, and web applications"
- French — 27% of candidates who lack it are blocked. "Speak fluent English and French."
- +46 more specialized tools — Also required across these roles: Python, Containers (Docker/K8s), CI/CD, SAP, Java, Infrastructure as Code, Google Cloud, Salesforce….
Fix over time
- Years of domain experience — 77% of candidates who lack it are blocked. Fades with tenure — don't over-target roles that demand it.
Walls — filter out
- Senior Leadership — 99% of candidates who lack it are blocked. A structural wall — filter these out and reclaim the hours. "The Regional Strategy Director is a trusted advisor to the Regional President and the European Leadership Team."
- Engineering Degree — 71% of candidates who lack it are blocked. Skip these; your applications are better spent elsewhere. "Master’s Degree in Engineering"
And the market is not one gate but many: 48,749 distinct must-haves appear across these postings — meaning nearly every role hides a different requirement. There is no single checklist to pass.
Method
These figures are aggregates over 27,951 distinct postings Boardsweep read and screened (a job seen in multiple scans is counted once). We publish statistics about requirements, never the postings themselves, and never any individual's data. A requirement counts when it is stated as a hard requirement in the posting. Percentages are the share of postings naming that requirement. Only markets resting on at least 100 distinct postings are published. Data as of 2026-09-10.
