The Requirements That Actually Block You
Rejection in a job search usually isn't about talent — it's about a hard requirement you didn't meet and often couldn't see. We measured which requirements do the disqualifying, across every posting Boardsweep has read.
We read 12,328 real roles. Here is exactly what they demand — and how often each gate stops the candidates who lack it:
Fix now — quick wins
- Spanish — 79% of candidates who lack it are blocked. A gate you can close — and it opens roles that reject you today. "Fluency in English and Spanish."
- French — 99% of candidates who lack it are blocked. This is where your effort pays back fastest. "Who We Are Artefact is a French consulting and engineering firm specializing in data and AI, and a leader in Europe. He…"
- German — 73% of candidates who lack it are blocked. Closeable, and it stands between you and real roles. "Business level German and English (written and verbal)"
- AI/ML tooling — 45% of candidates who lack it are blocked. A common ask — a little upskilling pays back fast. "A good understanding of statistical modelling knowledge or any machine learning technique knowledge (such as hypothesis…"
- SAP — 94% of candidates who lack it are blocked. Learnable — a focused course closes it. "2+ years of strong expertise in SAP PP (Production Planning) and APO"
- SQL — 49% of candidates who lack it are blocked. Teams here expect it; worth adding to your CV. "Proficiency in SQL, with the ability to independently source data and derive insights."
- AWS — 75% of candidates who lack it are blocked. Pick this up and more of these roles open. "Cloud: Experiencia en al menos un proveedor (AWS, GCP o Azure)."
- +29 more specialized tools — Also required across these roles: Azure, Containers (Docker/K8s), PLC / SCADA, ERP systems, Google Cloud, Python, CI/CD, Salesforce….
Fix over time
- Years of domain experience — 83% of candidates who lack it are blocked. Fades with tenure — don't over-target roles that demand it.
Walls — filter out
- Senior Leadership — 99% of candidates who lack it are blocked. A structural wall — filter these out and reclaim the hours. "This is a highly visible Head-level role with the opportunity to grow into broader Finance leadership"
- Engineering Degree — 66% of candidates who lack it are blocked. Skip these; your applications are better spent elsewhere. "Degree in Engineering (mechanical, electrical, industrial, or similar)"
And the market is not one gate but many: 24,216 distinct must-haves appear across these postings — meaning nearly every role hides a different requirement. There is no single checklist to pass.
Method
These figures are aggregates over 12,328 distinct postings Boardsweep read and screened (a job seen in multiple scans is counted once). We publish statistics about requirements, never the postings themselves, and never any individual's data. A requirement counts when it is stated as a hard requirement in the posting. Percentages are the share of postings naming that requirement. Only markets resting on at least 100 distinct postings are published. Data as of 2026-07-25.
